The legal framework for transferring a kitten

The cattery is located in the Walloon Region and is therefore subject to Walloon animal welfare regulations. The points below are not commercial promises but legal obligations.

  • Twelve weeks at the earliest

A kitten may not be weaned or transferred before the age of twelve weeks.

  • Identification and registration

Since 1 November 2017, every cat born in Wallonia must be microchipped and registered in the CatID database before the age of twelve weeks and, in any case, before any transfer.

  • Neutering before sale

In the Walloon Region a cat must be neutered before it is sold. Two exceptions: where the buyer is themselves a licensed breeder, or where they live outside the Walloon Region. A cat kept for breeding by a licensed breeder is not neutered; that happens as soon as it is no longer intended for breeding.

  • Approval, and the number in advertisements

An occasional cattery — two litters a year at most — must hold an approval and state its approval number in its advertisements. A web page offering kittens is such an advertisement.
